Skills Training for Employment Program (STE)

The STE program is meant to meet the needs of vulnerable and under-represented groups by providing skills training and employment supports such as:

  • counselling
  • mentoring
  • childcare
  • transportation
  • disability supports
  • work experience
  • wage subsidies
  • equipment

The STE programs are divided into six streams:

  • STE: Young Adults (18-24)
  • STE: Survivors of Violence and/or Abuse
  • STE: Impacted Workers*
  • STE: Young Adults at Risk (17-29)
  • STE: Older Workers 55+
  • STE: Individuals Facing Multiple Barriers

*specific to those affected by mill closures in BC

Apprenticeship Training

WorkBC apprenticeship programs, delivered in partnership with the Industry Training Authority (ITA), public and private training institutions, and employers, combine paid on-the-job training with learning in a classroom. Most programs take about 4 years to complete, 85% of which is on-the-job. In order to become qualified as a certified tradesperson in BC, one must:

  • complete the required on-the-job hours & in-school training
  • pass the examinations
  • earn the recommendation of your sponsoring employer

Employment Programs

  • Changing Gears for women – a free 23-week truck driver training program for women
  • Gear Up for youth 16-30 – a free 10-week program designed to equip participants with the skills, certification, and employer connections for a career as a bike mechanic
  • Focus@Work for women – a free 12-week program designed to assess participants’ skills and strengths, set career goals, and develop job search skills
  • Job Futures 55+ for job seekers who are 55+ years old – a free 10-week program which provides mature workers with skills training and employment supports
  • Online Essentials for women 15-30 years old – a free 12-week online program that prepares young women for careers in office administration, customer service, telecommunications, and tourism
  • TechLink for EI-eligible participants – a free 22-week program which provides EI eligible individuals with training and work experience in tech
