Empowered Healthcare: Navigating Your Care Journey as an Artist

Wednesday, December 4, 1-2 pm ET on Zoom

In this second session of our four-part series, participants will gain an essential overview of Canada’s healthcare system, focusing on how to effectively access the services and resources they need. We’ll cover key tips for navigating healthcare, including understanding patient rights, setting expectations for medical visits, and asking the right questions to ensure clear communication with providers. Participants will also learn about continuity of care and how to take an active role in managing their health across different healthcare settings.

Additionally, we’ll discuss various healthcare options, such as telemedicine and home visit services, that provide flexibility in accessing care. This workshop equips artists with practical strategies and insights to advocate for their health and make informed decisions about their healthcare journey.

Meet the Facilitators

Dr. Shelly-Anne Li is the Director and Scientist of Research & Community Engagement at the Artists’ Health Centre, University Health Network, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. At the Centre, Dr. Li develops and evaluates interventions and programs aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of artists, improving access to healthcare, and translating research into practice through health professional education and community engagement. She is passionate about sharing research and knowledge with arts communities, empowering them to advocate for and champion their own health needs.

Carolyn Franke has been a registered nurse for 38 years and has worked in a variety of settings, including pediatrics, general medicine, oncology and, for the last 16 years, primary care. This experience has provided her with the background to help clients identify their health needs and access services to meet those needs. Whether it’s how to find a family doctor to accessing low-cost food options, emergency funding or housing resources, Carolyn will try to help.
